In the fall of 2004 my husband, Steve, and I were motorcycling through New Mexico and detoured off the Turquoise Trail to discover Galisteo in the midst of its annual Art Tour. The tour proved to be a great opportunity to explore the village and meet resident artists in their studios. I wouldn't have imagined that we would return so often to New Mexico in the next few years and finally but a house and studio in the neighborhood!
I first fell in love with the big sky...usually so technicolor blue it hurt my eyes. However, it was the dynamic I saw between the land and sky which ripped through my imagination. I find so many parallels between the raw New Mexico landscape and the human body. Both experience life's layers of weathering and time yet often emerge more beautiful and polished. This concept inspires my work.
Over the years it has been the human form which has interested me most both as a physical and spiritual container. I began as a painter, but in the mid nineties I collaborated with artist, Trudy Solin, on a series of mixed media, often larger than life sculptures of full figures, torsos and masks. In the last five years , perhaps under the influence of enchanting New Mexico, I've turned to clay as my medium of choice. I look forward to a journey of learning and inspiration from such a raw material as earth itself! |
