| When Janet Pfeiffer first painted with
encaustic using beeswax as a medium, she had been painting for
30 years in watercolor, acrylic, and oils. She was astonished by
this method which seemed to synthesize what she considered the
attributes of all the other media and had its origins in Ancient
Greece. Since encaustic was virtually abandoned in the Renaissance
in favor of fresco and tempera, all but the most basic techniques
of this tradition have been lost. This absence of a corpus of encaustic
expression presents both certain challenges and certain freedoms.
Janet is presently exploring the limits of this medium's possibilities
from tradional landscapes to abstracted collage. |
