RACHEL DARNELL

Rachel Darnell developed the technique of woven canvas to represent and emphasize the interconnectedness and interdependence of all things, and has painted in this unique technique for twenty years. Woven canvases are a simple structure, yet profound in their strength, combining the immediacy and expressiveness of painting with the primitive structure of weaving. Traveling to ancient cities inspired the use of gold and silver leafing, which Rachel employs to create a jewel-like quality in her hues and pigments, and which has been used, throughout antiquity, to convey divinity. As an artist, Rachel attempts to revive ancient spiritual themes and find expression for them in the contemporary world.

Modern influences include the fiber artist Olga de Amaral and field colorist Mark Rothko. A tenet of Rachel’s process is the field colorists’ statement: “Elemental truth is conveyed by the simple expression of complex thought.”

Continuing her use of canvas and gold leaf, currently Rachel embraces a simplified and minimalist form. Canvas strips – the basis of her woven canvases serve not only as the surface for oil paint but also design elements. They construct a linear graphic that creates a minimalist structure, which effects a transcendent meditation.
